'ITALIAN HILL' RESIDENCE

This home was originally built as a Bed & Breakfast in a secluded area of Daylesford on a steep hillside. Due to the difficulty of the site, a pole framed floor structure was adopted to hover above the hill and give a treehouse like feel. The kitchen, dining and living areas are on the entry level, while the bedrooms and decadent bathroom are on the lower level offering dramatic views through corner windows.
The main living area is under a scissor truss roof which gives the look of a cathedral ceiling but with a roof space to allow much more insulation. The use of timber both structuraly and aesthetically is prominant, and contrasts with the rendered finish of the exterior strawbale walls in an earthy shade. The claddings of cedar weatherboard and cypress pine vertical board and batten, weathered differently according to their orientation, provide articulation to the composition. Wall and roof frames are fabricated entirely from plantation pine, while the sub-floor and deck are naturally durable and termite resistant cypress pine.
