McVEIGH RESIDENCE | |
|
The approach to the building presents a strong facade of geometric forms. |
This weekend retreat , clad in stone, is both an expression of winter cosiness and retreat from the burning sun at once. The warm earthy colours of the interior and the wood heater with stone surround are elements of the romantic vernacular of the country cottage. Specific to the Australian vernacular, is the deep verandah wrapping around the living spaces and sitting on solid posts. This creates a transitional threshold to moderate between an environment of extremes and an environment of human comfort. The forms of the building are derived from a typology which was forged over time to combat the challenges of the climate. The Castlemaine stone, selected, ordered and stacked into position represents an organisation of nature, rather than a conquering of it. |
